If you use ordinary boradcast radio receiver to listen Ham radio stations, you may hear stations that you can understand properly, these station sound like duck talking, these are SSB stations.

SSB is Single Side Band. You need BFO (Beat Frequency Oscillator) to listen these sites.

SSB transmitters are more efficient than AM recivers as they do not transmit carrier and one of the side band, BFO injects missing carrier to reproduce the orginal voice signals.
